Teeside Steelers recorded their first victory of the season against a battling Heworth 'A' team. The Steelers play was somewhat disjointed for the first hour, allowing Heworth to build up a 21-10 lead. In the last 20 minutes though the Steelers settled down and managed to pull off a morale boosting victory.
In the first half, it was Heworth who enjoyed the majority of possession, controlling the ball, better than the Steelers' attack. However, the Steelers defence stood firm and for all their possession Heworth only managed to convert a penalty through Watson and a drop goal by Potter. The Steelers managed to get on the score sheet when they put the Heworth line under pressure for the first time. Strong running from the Steelers pack allowed the backs to move the ball outwide for Taylor to score, he then added the conversion (6-3). This lifted the Steelers and they enjoyed their best spell of the half, going close through Mayer and Fretwell, but just couldn't improve their lead. Instead, it was Heworth who went into the half time interval, when Ogorman regathered his own kick to score, Watson converting (6-9).
The Steelers regained the lead early in the second half when Fretwell put Taylor through the gap, he in turn fed Mayer, who then raced 50 yards to make a try scoring debut (10-9). Heworth then started to dominate the game, moving the ball outwide at every opportunity. But it took a fine piece of individual skill from Dickinson to break the Steelers defence when he somehow managed to get the ball down over the try line despite the attentions of four defenders, Watson converting (10-15). Heworth increased their lead further after good work by their pack took play deep into Steelers territory and Potter crashed over, Watson converting (10-21). To their credit the Steelers didn't let their heads drop and they clawed back some of the deficit when Darby put Fretwell through a gap and he raced into to score, Taylor converting (16-21). The Steelers now started to play some attractive rugby, and they regained the lead when Haran fed Boyd who crashed in at the corner, Taylor converting (22-21). Teesside now had total control of the game and it was Darby and Fretwell who combined again, to see Fretwell score for his second try by the posts to seal the game for the Steelers, Taylor converting (28-21).
